BP Challenge

Baden Powell Challenge

This is the highest award a Guide can achieve. It is an individual challenge and can take up to and over a year to complete. Before starting the challenge a Guide must have made their promise, gained at least two Guide Challenge Badges and also two interest badges.

To finish the award Guides need to attend a Baden Powell Adventure. These are residential events that are a celebration of all they have achieved. They are plenty of  fun, challenging, adventurous, an opportunity to make new friends and also find out what's next in Guiding.

Baden Powell Adventure Weekend - May 2011

On a damp, chilly Friday night, mid May, 4 leaders and 27 girls met each other for the first time and started a weekend full of challenges, adventure, laughter and friendship. We quickly learned each others names although some gained new ones such as 'red top' and 'eleven toes'!!

Teams were allocated and in a rush to beat the weather tents were put up and tea was eaten. Team names such as 'The Wellies' , Team 'Nameless' and Team 'Carpark'? were dreamt up. We celebrated Lucy's and Charlotte's birthday with cake, candles and balloons and the girls spent the rest of the evening finding out about 'What's Next?' with Susie.

Saturday was spent on an incident hike around Carsington water. 8 challenges had to be completed on the way involving games & puzzles, spiders webs, flags and even rubber ducks! Some teams found following a circular route particularly challenging and others found finding the lunch spot difficult.

The weather kept fine for us although it was gusty enough to blow one leader off her bike!

After re-pegging tents and eating enough custard to sink a battle ship we swapped BP stories in the evening and ate cake (this was a common theme throughout the weekend) retiring to bed ready for Sunday.

Our BP girls were split into two groups, one sailing and the other rafting. After struggling with wetsuits, helmets and buoyancy aids they were ready(ish) for the water. There was plenty of splashing and squealing, enough to clear the ducks away! We got back to strike camp in the dry and enjoyed burgers and hot dogs for lunch (and more cake), hand out certificates and celebrate team 'RAAH!' winning the incident hike before everyone had to leave.

Karen, Pippa, Lucy and Dot would like to thank all the helpers who came over the weekend: June,  Sarah, Annette, Vera   (Monty & hubby), Jason, John, Frazer (the cake monster), Jess, Imogen, Edwina, Phoebe, Deb, Siân, Susie, Avril and  Bob. Without your help and support it would have been impossible to have done –  Thank you again.

Most of all we would especially like to thank the girls who attended – You were all FAB! We're glad you enjoyed the weekend and we hope to see you in the future, still Guiding in Derbyshire!

For a guide to obtain her BP Challange they need to complete ten clauses from five different zones. Their Guide leader ensures
that each clause is challenging for that particular Guide and supports and encourages her along the way.

The five zones and their aims are:

Healthy Lifestyles - To encourage Guides to lead a healthy lifestyle by promoting physical, emotional ad spiritual well-being.

Global Awareness – To increase awareness of global issues and of the contribution each Guide can make.

Discovery – To challenge Guides with new experiences and adventure.

Skills and Relationships – To develop Guides' self-confidence and self-worth and to improve their interpersonal and life skills.

Celebrating Diversity – To promote active citizenship among Guides, developing their awareness of rights and responsibilities
for all.

To finish the award Guides need to attend a Baden Powell Adventure. These are residential events that are a celebration of all they have achieved. They are plenty of  fun, challenging, adventurous, an opportunity to make new friends and also find out what's next in Guiding.

After all this they then have a meeting with their District Commissioner who will be pleased to hear all about what they've been doing for the challenge and will award them with their hard earned Baden Powell Challenge Award.

The challenge is not for the feint hearted and the Guides who complete it are rightly proud of their achievements.

If you are interested in completing the challenge then talk to your Guider or the county  BP co-ordinator who will help you get
started.
